The Emergence of a New Genre: Why Young Adult and Why Now?

If you’re under 25 you probably think that the genre called Young Adult has been with us since forever. But it’s actually pretty new (given that publishing must be the world’s second oldest profession). For a newbie, it’s already well established with its own acronym of YA and sub-groupings: 13-18 (Young Young Adult) and then 16-19 (Older Young Adult) and now even 19-25 (New Adult) with considerable overlap between the groupings.
